The
roller bearing contains many individual and highly toleranced
components. When properly applied to a qualified axle journal,
it becomes a system whose function is to reliably carry
the weight of the railcar and its cargo with minimal rolling
resistance. There are both load carrying and non-load
carrying components which comprise the bearing stack.
Certain
components of the bearing have been designed to carry the
load. These components safely carry the weight of the railcar
and its cargo with a minimum of rolling resistance. The
non-load carrying components position the bearing laterally
on the axle and provide the force necessary to achieve
proper bearing clamp. Although they do not directly carry
the weight of the railcar and its cargo, these components
are critical to overall bearing performance. These
components are sometimes called auxiliary components and
complete the bearing stack. |
